UNBELIEF LIMITS GOD’S POWER
It is a popular saying that familiarity breeds contempt. Jesus went on His last visit to Nazareth, His hometown, after teaching the people in parables (v.53). The people were astonished at the wisdom and His mighty works which were displayed among them.
However, they despised Him because of their familiarity with Him (vs.55-
56). What was the result of their familiarity with Christ and unbelief (vs.57&58)?
What else did the familiarity breed in the village people (v.58)? This type of response is quite common even in our time. We often despise some people because of our close relationship with them or their age or sex or tribe.
We should avoid limiting God’s power in our individual lives and the lives of others. If we limit God because of lack of faith in His power, we deny ourselves the opportunity of experiencing His miraculous intervention in our lives and situations.
Familiarity with the holy things empowers the flesh and give room for Satan to reign, beware! (Matt. 7:6).
And so? Beware of becoming so familiar with the word of God, the Bible; it may no longer challenge you deeply.
PRAYER: Help me, dear Lord, to grow in love for you and your word as you reveal yourself to me each day.
Break down of the guide:
Familiarity with Jesus in His hometown of Nazareth led to contempt, as the people despised Him despite His wisdom and mighty works. This response is common, as people often underestimate or despise others due to close relationships, age, sex, tribe, or other factors. Familiarity with sacred things, including God’s Word, can lead to complacency and limit one’s experience of God’s power and miraculous intervention.
Prayer for Tuesday:
PRAISE GOD FOR THE GRACE THAT MADE YOU A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST. PRAY FOR THE VARIOUS CHURCH LEADERS, ESPECIALLY THOSE YOU KNOW.
